Ultimate Guide To Thank You Note Etiquette

Blog May 7 2018

We’ve got you covered with this ultimate guide to thank you note etiquette!

After the fun and excitement of your wedding (and honeymoon) have come and gone, it’s time to tackle the process of writing your thank you notes.

The thank you note tradition provides a way to express your gratitude for not only the gift received, but for being there to help celebrate your marriage.

Although thank you note etiquette has changed over time, there are a few tried and true suggestions that couples should always follow:

The Timing

Proper thank you note etiquette should involve sending those thank you notes in a timely fashion.

It’s all too easy to put the writing of thank you notes on the back burner. However, the longer you wait the more difficult it’s going to be to start!

Set a finish date goal and stick to it. “Write your thank you notes as soon as you get back from your honeymoon. If you wait much longer, chances are they’ll never make it out! The sooner you finish, the sooner you can focus your time on bigger things, like house hunting or preparing for a family, without thank you cards hanging over you,” explains Audrey Isaac of 100 Candles.

Keep it Personal

We know the process of writing thank you notes can be daunting. However, you don’t want to get into the habit of just repeating the same statements over and over again in your messages. “Try to avoid ‘fill-in-the-blank’ responses. Although this can sometimes be easier said than done, always try to keep your message personal to who you are writing it to,” says Fabrice Orlando of Cocoon Events Management Group.

Remember Everyone

It is very important to stay organized when it comes to tracking gifts in order to send your thank you notes. This will help you to ensure that you respond to everyone and thank them for their specific gift.

“When you write your thank you cards, it’s always a nice and personalized touch to thank guests specifically for what they got you,” share Isaac. “To make this easier, start a list to keep track as gifts start to come in – you’ll be grateful to know who got you what when it’s time to get those cards in the mail!”

Don’t Forget Your Vendors!

Thank you note etiquette involves thanking everyone which means your vendors too.

A popular trend as of late is sending thank you notes to your vendor team.

These are the people who helped to make your day a dream come true, and they love nothing more than hearing from clients. Megan Velez of Destination Weddings Travel Group explains, “Don’t forget your wedding team! So often, couples are overwhelmed with the number of wedding guests they have to write thank you notes for that they forget about their vendors. If you don’t write a note, writing a review on their website or a third-party site is another great way to send your gratitude and is sure to make their day.”

The process of writing thank you notes doesn’t have to be a chore. Set times during the evening with your spouse and do it together, so you can reminisce about favorite moments of the day!
